The City is Waking Up

The calendar says it is late January, but the streets of Hanoi are telling a different story. The gray winter sky is suddenly being painted over with bright splashes of red, pink, and gold.

We grabbed our cameras this morning and took a walk from the Old Quarter up to the flower villages by the Red River.

Here is what Hanoi looks like right now.

1.The Sea of Red (Hang Ma & Hang Luoc)

Walking through the Old Quarter feels like walking inside a lantern. The streets are draped in lucky red ornaments, gold ingots, and intricate paper fans. The energy here is electric. You can hear the “Tet songs” playing from speakers and see locals hunting for the perfect decoration to bring luck to their homes.

Everyone is a photographer this week. The colors are so vibrant that you can’t help but stop and capture the moment. It is a time of joy, not just stress.

2.The Pink Mist (Nhat Tan Village)

We moved north to Nhat Tan, and the scene changed completely. The classic “Hanoi Winter” mist is hanging low over the streets, creating a dreamy backdrop for thousands of Peach Blossom (Hoa Đào) trees. This is the most romantic sight of the season. The delicate pink petals against the gray fog is the signature look of a Northern Tet. It feels quiet, ancient, and deeply peaceful compared to the noisy city center.

3.The “Kumquat Convoy”

And, of course, the traffic has transformed. Look at the motorbikes! Everyone is balancing a pot of Kumquats on their back seat. In the chilly air, people are bundled up in coats and masks, carefully transporting their “Tree of Wealth” home. It is a chaotic ballet that somehow works perfectly.

4. A Treat for Travelers

We saw many travelers walking through the markets today, eyes wide open, soaking it all in. You don’t need to buy a tree to enjoy this. Just walking through these aisles, smelling the fresh flowers, and watching the local life unfolds is one of the best travel experiences you can have in Southeast Asia.

[Come Walk With Us] The city will look like this for another two weeks until the big night (February 16th). If you are in Hanoi, do not stay in your hotel room.

Put on a jacket, grab a camera, and go get lost in the colors of Tet.

Happy Pre-Tet from the Tonkin Travel team!
