If you are planning to ring in 2026 in Vietnam, you face a difficult choice.
Because Vietnam is so long and diverse, New Year’s Eve feels completely different depending on where you are. The weather, the crowd, and the energy change drastically as you move South.
Here is the Tonkin Travel guide to the “Big 5” cities, ranked from North to South.
1. Hanoi: The “Winter” Block Party
The Vibe: Cold, chaotic, and communal.
The Weather: Warning: It is cold. Expect 14°C – 18°C (57°F – 64°F). You will need a jacket.
The Scene: The entire area around Hoan Kiem Lake becomes a pedestrian-only zone. The epicenter is Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square (the fountain), where the official countdown concert happens.
Who is it for? People who love street energy. The tradition here is “Bia Hoi” (fresh beer) on the sidewalk. You sit on a plastic stool, shoulder-to-shoulder with locals in winter coats, chanting “Mot, Hai, Ba, DO!“

2. Hue: The “Unexpected” Giant
The Vibe: Massive, spacious, and booming.
The Scene: Forget the old reputation of Hue being “sleepy.” This year, the city has unveiled the new Cultural & Sports Square (Quảng trường Văn hóa Thể thao) specifically to host a massive Countdown 2026.
The Upgrade: Unlike the cramped streets of the Old Quarter in Hanoi, this new square holds over 10,000 people. It features a massive stage, EDM DJs, and top-tier lighting systems.
Who is it for? Travelers who want the excitement of a major music festival without the claustrophobia of Hanoi or Saigon. Hue has officially woken up.

3. Da Nang: The Fire-Breathing Dragon
The Vibe: Modern, spacious, and family-friendly.
The Scene: The icon here is the Dragon Bridge. On NYE, the dragon usually performs a special fire-and-water breathing show. The city often shoots fireworks over the Han River.
Who is it for? Families and beach lovers. Da Nang is much less claustrophobic than Hanoi or Saigon. You can watch the fireworks from the wide, breezy riverside promenade without being crushed.

4. Hoi An: The Lantern Fairytale
The Vibe: Romantic, acoustic, and magical.
The Scene: Forget the bass-heavy techno. In Hoi An, the party is lit by thousands of silk lanterns. The Hoai River fills with small candle-lit paper boats released for good luck. The bars in the Ancient Town throw parties, but the energy is more “live acoustic band” than “DJ club.“
Who is it for? Romantics. Standing on the bridge watching the lanterns floating on the river at midnight is arguably the most beautiful NYE visual in Vietnam.
5. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): The Tropical Rave
The Vibe: Hot, humid, and intense.
The Weather: Summer clothes only. It will be 27°C (80°F) at midnight.
The Scene: This is the biggest party in the country. Nguyen Hue Walking Street turns into a massive open-air club with tens of thousands of people.
Who is it for? Party animals. If you want to dance until 4 AM, go to a rooftop bar in District 1 (like Chill Skybar or Zion) to watch the fireworks, then hit the clubs.
