The End of the Paper Trail
If you have traveled to Southeast Asia during peak season, you know the dread of stepping off a 14-hour flight only to hit a wall of hundreds of people waiting to clear customs.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is finally eliminating that bottleneck.
Vietnam has officially digitized its entry procedures for foreign passport holders arriving in Saigon. To keep the lines moving, immigration officials have implemented a new mandatory Pre-Arrival Declaration system.
It takes less than five minutes, but there are strict rules on when and how you can complete it. If you do it wrong, you will be pulled out of the fast lane. Here is how to ensure your entry is seamless.

The 4 Critical Rules of the New System
1. The 72-Hour Window
You cannot cross this off your to-do list a month in advance. The government portal restricts the selection of arrival dates to within 72 hours of your landing time. You must complete this in the final three days before you arrive.
2. The Email Verification (OTP)
Do not try to fill this out on the airplane unless you have purchased in-flight Wi-Fi. The portal requires an OTP (One-Time Password) sent directly to your email address to finalize the form. You must have active internet access to receive this code.
3. Have Your Accommodation Ready
To generate your code, you will need to input your inbound flight number and the exact address of your first hotel or residence in Vietnam. Have your itinerary open.
4. It Does NOT Replace Your Visa
This digital form replaces the old paper arrival cards; it does not act as a visa. You must still secure your e-Visa or ensure your visa exemption status is valid prior to arriving at the airport.
How to Execute
Step 1: Within 72 hours of landing, visit the official portal: prearrival.immigration.gov.vn
Step 2: Fill out your passport, flight, and hotel details, and verify with the email OTP.
Step 3: Save the generated QR Code directly to your phone. Take a screenshot so you don’t need internet access to pull it up at the immigration desk.
(Note: Currently, this is only mandatory for arrivals at Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, not Hanoi or Da Nang).
