The Elephant in the Room

We love Chiang Mai and Thailand. We love the ancient temples of Luang Prabang, Laos. But as your advisors, we have a rule: We do not book Northern Thailand or Northern Laos in March.

Every year, from late February to mid-April, the region suffers from what is locally known as the “Burning Season.” Farmers across the Golden Triangle (Thailand, Laos, Myanmar) burn their fields to prepare for the next crop cycle. Combined with forest fires and a geography that traps air in the valleys, the result is a thick, acrid smog.

  • The Reality: AQI (Air Quality Index) levels can hit “Hazardous.” The famous mountain views disappear behind a wall of grey smoke. Your eyes sting, and you smell like a campfire.

  • The Verdict: Do not spend $5,000 on a luxury trip to cough for a week.

Smoke over Chiang Mai

The Good News? While the North is smoky, the South is spectacular. March is arguably the best month of the year for the islands. The sea is calm, the sky is electric blue, and the air is pristine.

Here are the 3 Luxury Swaps we recommend for your March 2026 trip.

Alternative 1: The “Thai Island” Fix (Similan Islands)

If you want Thailand, head South. But don’t just go to Phuket. Go deeper. The Similan Islands are a protected National Marine Park that is only open from November to May. In March, they are at their absolute peak.

  • The Vibe: This is the clearest water in Thailand. Think “Maldives” clarity. Giant granite boulders, powdery white sand, and world-class snorkeling.

  • Where to Stay: The islands themselves have no hotels (only tents/bungalows), so we book you at Khao Lak (just 1 hour north of Phuket) at a resort like The Sarojin. From there, you take a private speedboat to the Similans for the day.

  • Why it works: You get the Thai culture and food without the smoke.

Alternative 2: The “Vietnam” Fix (Phu Quoc)

If you want an island that rivals Thailand but feels less “touristy,” cross the border to Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island. March is the final month of the perfect “Dry Season” here.

  • The Vibe: Phu Quoc has evolved. You can stay in the South (Sunset Town) for Italian-style architecture and the Kiss Bridge, or the Center (Long Beach) for pure luxury.

  • Where to Stay:

    • Regent Phu Quoc: For the client who wants the best service in Southeast Asia.

    • JW Marriott Emerald Bay: For a Bill Bensley-designed fantasy on the island’s best white-sand beach (Khem Beach).

  • Why it works: It is a direct 1-hour flight from Saigon or Bangkok. Zero smoke. 100% sunshine.

Alternative 3: The “Culture” Fix (Hoi An, Vietnam)

If you were going to Chiang Mai for the culture (temples/old town) and not the beach, then swap it for Hoi An. In March, Central Vietnam is dry and sunny (unlike the North of Vietnam which can be misty).

  • The Vibe: Like Chiang Mai, Hoi An is an ancient town with no cars, full of lanterns, temples, and incredible street food. It scratches that “Heritage” itch perfectly.

  • Where to Stay: Four Seasons The Nam Hai. It is a 10-minute drive from the Old Town but sits on a private stretch of beach. You get culture in the morning and ocean in the afternoon.

Summary: The 2026 Strategy

  • January: Go North (Chiang Mai is cool and clear).

  • February: Go Early (Before Feb 15th).

  • March/April: Go South.
